OPINION

Aston Villa secured their place in the Championship play-offs with a comfortable 1-0 win over Leeds United on Friday evening, and there were plenty of talking points to take from the game.

Lewis Grabban scored the only goal of the game after 29 minutes when he rose to head home Jack Grealish’s pinpoint cross from the left flank.

Villa had a few opportunities to double their lead but found themselves up against an inspired performance by Leeds goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, along with some poor finishing at times.

Friday’s clash saw the return of Villa striker Jonathan Kodjia to the starting XI, with the Ivory Coast international missing since November with an ankle injury which has required two operations, but he failed to get on the scoresheet.

Leeds slowly got back into the game after the goal but failed to really test Villa stopper Sam Johnstone, who had an exceptionally quiet night between the sticks.

The Whites have now won just two of 13 games under Paul Heckingbottom, who was brought in to replace Thomas Christiansen in February, but has failed to incite a reaction from his squad.
