Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez is on the whole enjoying a fine debut season in English football, but there are certainly signs that he has much to improve on based on recent performances.

The 21-year-old arrived at Spurs from Dutch giants Ajax last summer and is a ball-playing centre-back.

He has been an ever-present in the backline given the injury problems to Toby Alderweireld, who has not featured in the Premier League since April.

Sanchez has formed a good understanding alongside centre-back partner Jan Vertonghen and has impressed with his pace and power.

However, there are still gaps in his game and manager Mauricio Pochettino needs to iron them out to help him develop into a top-class goalkeeper.

Sanchez looked uncomfortable at times on Sunday during Spurs’ 4-1 win over Bournemouth as his side were behind early in the encounter.

The Colombia international was dispossessed a couple of times on the ball and was guilty of having poor positions during stages of the match.

He is not expected to be the finished article at the age of 21, but has immense pressure on him starting for a Spurs team that are hugely ambitious.

Sanchez is definitely going to keep improving and has the potential to become a permanent option in the long-term.

However, Toby Alderweireld’s return could be imminent and there will be serious competition for the centre-back spots.
