Italian club Lazio are lining up a move for Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen, according to Corriere Della Sport.

The Italian news outlet claims that the Serie A side are beginning to prepare for life without their current centre-back Stefan de Vrij.

It is understood they have identified Spurs’ colossus as one of the players that would be a natural replacement in the summer transfer window.

The report has listed a number of European defenders that are being considered, but AC Milan ace Alessio Romagnoli is viewed as the dream signing.

Lazio are currently fourth in the Italian top flight and are admiring Spurs’ 30-year-old, who has become a key figure under Mauricio Pochettino.

Good move for Spurs?

It would make no sense for Spurs to sell Vertonghen as he is still one of the most crucial players in the squad and has been arguably the standout centre-back in the Premier League this season.

The Belgium international has a very physical presence, great leadership qualities, and a range of passing that helps Spurs build up from the back.

He can still play a vital role in the next couple of years for the club and they should avoid selling him in the summer at all costs.

Likely to happen?

Spurs will surely rebuff any potential interest in Vertonghen as he is a mainstay in Pochettino’s side.

The left-footed defender is only under contract with the club until 2019, but it would be a major shock if he was to leave in the summer.
