Steven Thompson has criticised Rangers centre-forward Alfredo Morelos for his miss in the 3-2 defeat to Celtic on Sunday afternoon.

The 21-year-old wasted an easy opportunity late on in the game as he struck the post from close-range and the visitors went on to see out the rest of match with 10 men.

Rangers led twice during the first-half thanks to goals from Josh Windass and Daniel Candieas, but were pegged back by Tom Rogic and Moussa Dembele.

The Light Blues were then given a lift when Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic was shown a straight red card for an elbow on Morelos.

However, Brendan Rodgers’ side defied the odds with a Odsonne Edouard goal to win the contest and move nine points clear at the top of the league.

BBC pundit Thompson was critical of Morelos for his huge miss in the league fixture and ripped into him for it.

“There are possibly no words to describe the miss from Alfredo Morelos,” he told BBC Sport.

“In a game of that magnitude, you simply have to score. I have a small degree of sympathy with him because I missed sitters in my career and there is nothing worse.

“He will be replaying that moment for a very long time in the back of his head. It is a tough one for him to take, but he absolutely has to score.”

OPINION

Morelos has scored 17 goals across all competitions this season, but ultimately missed a very easy chance in the Old Firm clash that will stick with him. The Colombian missed from just a few yards in the latter stages of the game and the defeat has quickly eliminated any hopes of a potential title race. However, Graeme Murty’s side can take some pride for the way they performed in the game and are certainly not a million miles away from Celtic anymore. The Ibrox outfit will need some investment in the summer to continue their development, but are slowly edging back towards the top.
