Celtic have confirmed that young enforcer Stephen Welsh has agreed terms on a new two-year contract with the Parkhead club.

As reported by the club’s official website, the 18-year-old centre-back has signed a new deal which keeps him at the club until the summer of 2020.

Welsh has been a regular for the club’s development team this season following promotion from the Under-17s, and has been capped at various youth levels for Scotland.

The centre-back was recently named in the Scotland Under-19 squad for the UEFA European Championship elite round.

The club state that Welsh is looking to push on and continue his quick development with the aim of being the next youth player to break into the club’s first team.

OPINION

It looks as though Celtic have another Premiership title in hand after their 3-2 win in the Old Firm derby at the weekend. Dody defensive performances have however threatened to undermine the Hoops’ season, and Brendan Rodgers will be looking for young players to step up soon. Welsh may still be some way off the first team, but his development is seemingly moving quickly, and you never know, he may get a chance in the first team sooner than expected.
