Graeme Souness has delivered his verdict ahead of the weekend’s highly anticipated clash between Rangers and Celtic.

Ex-Gers player and manager Souness has stated that a win for the Light Blues would be a victory for Scottish football as it would draw the two Old Firm rivals closer in the league.

Graeme Murty’s side welcome the Bhoys to Ibrox on Sunday afternoon and know that they will move just three points behind the league leaders with a win.

They have been in brilliant form of late with 23 goals in their last six games across all competitions and are now looking to set up a title race.

Meanwhile, Celtic are vying for another top-flight title, but have to get over their recent disappointing exit in the Europa League.

Sky Sports pundit Souness hopes Rangers pick up three points given his connections to the club, but insists it would be a great result for the league if get a victory.

“Rangers are a bit closer and that’s good for Scottish football – it’s certainly good for Rangers,” Souness told Sky Sports Scotland, as cited by their official Twitter account.

“Celtic are still a bit in front. It would go down to three points, they’ve never been closer to them, and this weekend will tell us a great deal.

“Obviously as an ex-Rangers man I want that to happen, but I think it would be good for Scottish football to give us a competition again so its not a one-horse race.”

OPINION

There is a lot riding on the weekend Old Firm clash and Celtic are certainly under pressure to show that they are still top dogs in Scotland. However, people are forgetting that Rangers are also under the spotlight and they need to prove to their fans that they can compete with the best. The Gers may have been in brilliant form of late and started to look a real attacking force under the guidance of Murty. They must now back it up against Celtic and with home advantage really need three points to get back into the title race. Celtic still have the firepower to rip apart any team in Scotland and have their own minds set on a second domestic treble in the space of two years.
