Tottenham manger Mauricio Pochettino insists that defender Jan Vertonghen is enjoying his best season in the last four years.

The 30-year-old centre-back has been an ever-present in the Spurs backline for recent years and was at the club when Pochettino arrived in 2014.

He has formed a great understanding alongside Belgian Toby Alderweireld in the heart of defence, while Davinson Sanchez has also cropped into the picture this season.

Vertonghen has received widespread praise for his individual displays this campaign and been part of an impressive defence.

Pochettino has singled out the left-footed defender for special praise and feels he has reached a new level this season.

“I think Jan is doing for me, after we arrive here, his best season in four years. He’s showing his best and I am so happy with him. He’s always available. The day before Crystal Palace it was a small thing and I’m so happy with him. He’s doing a great job,” Pochettino said, as quoted by Football.London.

OPINION

Vertonghen certainly has been a key player this season and the consistency in his game is remarkable. He has been a real leader at the back during Alderweireld’s absence and must be one of the first names on Pochettino’s team sheet. The centre-back is in the peak of his powers as a 30-year-old and there is a case for him to be included in the PFA Team of the Year at the end of the season.
