BBC pundit Martin Keown has pinpointed the major difference between Tottenham and Liverpool when it comes to winning silverware.
Tottenham have come in for much criticism after they crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Juventus on Wednesday evening after holding a lead over the Italian giants.
Two goals in three minutes put paid to Spurs’ hopes of progressing, and has heaped further pressure on Mauricio Pochettino and the club to win some silverware.
Liverpool on the other hand secured easy progress to the quarter-finals with a 0-0 draw against Porto on Tuesday which came after a 5-0 first-leg win.
Speaking in his ‘Tackle Keown’ Q&A with the Daily Mail, the former Arsenal defender was asked why there is extra pressure on Spurs and not Liverpool to win silverware, with both teams not having won anything in several years.
“Liverpool are a club renowned for winning trophies but they have not won any silverware since the League Cup in 2012. Jurgen Klopp has made Liverpool much better than local rivals Everton and now they are going toe-to-toe with Manchester United to become the second-best team in the country.
“The fact that they are on an even keel with United may have relieved some of the pressure to win a trophy. Pep Guardiola described Tottenham as the ‘Harry Kane team’ and while Spurs have plenty of other fine players, there is a feeling that the club would change significantly should the striker leave.
“For that reason, there is a pressure on Tottenham to win silverware,” he said.
OPINION
It does indeed seem as though there is added pressure on Spurs to win a trophy, when Liverpool do find themselves in a similar situation. Either way, both clubs still have a decent chance of rectifying that in the coming months. Liverpool look extremely dangerous in the Champions League this season, and are a match for any team left in the competition. Spurs on the other hand have a decent chance of winning the FA Cup, and face Swansea next in the quarter-finals.
