Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane is set for a massive boost after Gareth Southgate decided to name him as England captain for the World Cup, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper report that Southgate has doubts about handing the armband to a striker, but Kane is still ahead of Jordan Henderson, Gary Cahill, Joe Hart and teammate Eric Dier in the race for the captaincy.

The Star claim that Southgate has taken an age to think about who is the best man for the job in Russia, with Kane set to be handed the major honour of leading the nation into the tournament.

Kane has captained the side on four occasions so far under Southgate, with the manager deciding to rotate the responsibility among his squad so far.

OPINION

If Kane is handed the captaincy, it will be a much-needed boost for both player and club. Tottenham are still reeling from their devastating Champions League exit at the hands of Juventus in midweek, and this would serve as a massive pick-me-up for their best player. In truth, Kane deserves the accolade. He is a natural leader on the pitch, and has been his club and country’s best player on a consistent basis for a while now, meaning his appointment looks a no-brainer.
