Newcastle United are considering offering striker Luke Charman a new contract as he has scored 11 goals for Newcastle United’s Under-23s this season, according to The Chronicle.

The local newspaper claim that the 20-year-old forward is one of the Magpies’ youth players that will likely be handed a new deal, with his teammates’ futures hanging in the balance.

The Chronicle report that there are several players waiting for news on their futures, including U-23 captain Jack Hunter and defender Michael Newberry whose deals are set to expire soon.

The centre-forward has been in the Magpies’ U-23 team since July 2016, and Charman’s impressive form this season looks likely to extend his time with the side.

OPINION

With several players waiting to hear about their future, there is sure to be many nervous faces around the Magpies’ youth system at the moment. The Chronicle’s report also shared that the club are keen to keep an eye on their development squad as they want more success stories to come out of their academy.  This means the Magpies will no doubt be harsh when it comes to cutting people from their youth teams as they no doubt want to get rid of the deadwood in order to be able to notice the players who could potentially feature in their first-team one day. The Magpies are finally paying attention to their academy, and that should ensure that the club have a brighter future.
