Liverpool defender Joel Matip has bizarrely revealed that he is unhappy because he has not scored enough goals for the club.

The 26-year-old shared that he was hoping to improve his goal return soon despite being a defender.

“I hope that a few more will follow as I am not happy with my goal return,” said Matip, as quoted by the Daily Star.

“I am a defender, I know, but I think to myself that I could score more goals for Liverpool than I already did.

“Maybe sometimes I need a little bit of luck, maybe sometimes I have to do something different when I go forward.”

Matip has scored one goal this season after making 34 appearances across all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

This means that the 26-year-old centre-back has scored a grand total of two goals in 66 games for the Reds, having joined the club in 2016 from FC Schalke.

The defender was by no means prolific at his former club either, only managing 23 goals in 258 appearances across all competitions.

OPINION

This is a weird confession by Matip, as no one is expecting him to be prolific. Reds supporters would just be happy if he excelled at keeping his side clean sheets, as he hasn’t exactly been impressive during his displays this season. The 26-year-old defender is not guaranteed a place in Klopp’s starting line-up, and it’s doubtful that he isn’t picked because he doesn’t score. It is nice to hear that Matip wants to improve himself, but he is focusing on the wrong aspect of his game. Hopefully Klopp pulls him aside and reassures him that he doesn’t need to focus on adding goals to his game right now.
