Former Liverpool scout Alex Miller revealed that the club tried to sign John Terry from Chelsea in 2003.

In an interview with ESPN, Miller who was the director of scouting under Gerard Houllier told a story about how the club tried to sign Terry and how they were able to establish contact with him.

“I tried to get John Terry to come,” Miller said, as quoted by ESPN.

“It was 2003 when Chelsea beat Liverpool for the last place in the Champions League.

“It went to the final day and they beat us at Stamford Bridge, after the game I went to speak to John Terry to try and get him.

“How I did it was, I went up to him in the corridor and asked him for his autograph, he said yes.

“As he was signing it I said, could you put your mobile phone number?

“Gerard Houllier would like to talk to you.”

“He put his agent’s number and said to talk to him, Gerard Houllier spoke to his agent on the bus, I think he just used us to get more money out of Chelsea.”

Terry left Chelsea in the summer and joined the Championship’s Aston Villa.

The 37-year-old defender has legendary status at the Blues as he made 696 appearances for the club and helped them win the Premier League five times during his spell at the club.

OPINION

Miller revealed that he looked at Cristiano Ronaldo, Diego Forlan and a host other well known players, but it’s interesting that Terry’s agent spoke to Liverpool about a move. The former Reds scout is no doubt right about Terry using the club’s interest in him as leverage to get a better deal at Stamford Bridge, but it’s still hard to imagine him talking about moving to Anfield. The veteran defender is considered to be Chelsea through and through, and it’s weird to even consider him playing for another Premier League club. It’s a shame that Houllier was never able to convince him from a Liverpool perspective, as Terry would have been a fantastic signing for the club in 2003.
