Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk led the Netherlands to a brilliant 3-0 win over Portugal in a friendly on Monday evening, and Reds fans have taken to Twitter to rave about his display.

The 26-year-old was recently named the country’s new captain by new coach Ronald Koeman, but the Netherlands lost his first game as skipper against England by a 1-0 scoreline on Friday.

Koeman’s men bounced back well on Monday however as they waltzed to a comfortable win over World Cup-bound Portugal, who saw Joao Cancelo sent off in the second-half.

Former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay opened the scoring for the Netherlands in Geneva on 11 minutes, before former Liverpool star Ryan Babel doubled their lead.

Van Dijk then got on the scoresheet himself just before the break with a fantastic half-volley following a well-worked free-kick from the right flank.

That was his first goal in international colours, and van Dijk also managed to keep a clean sheet on a successful night for the Netherlands.

In the process of beating Portugal, van Dijk and the Netherlands broke Cristiano Ronaldo’s scoring run for Portugal, with the Real Madrid star having netted in his past nine international matches.

Liverpool fans took to Twitter after the game to rave about the display of their centre-back and his goalscoring display.
