Newcastle United are reportedly keen on a move for Burnley winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson, but they should ditch plans to try sign him in the summer as there is better value for money in the market.

The Sun report that the Magpies, Leicester and Southampton are all in a £20million fight for Gudmundsson ahead of the summer transfer window.

It is understood there is a three-way scrap for the 27-year-old’s signature and that Rafael Benitez is a big fan.

However, Burnley are keen to extend the contract of their first teamer, who has two goals and six assists this season in a team that are seventh in the Premier League.

Newcastle should forget their interest in Gudmundsson as at £20million he is definitely overpriced and they do already have some decent options out wide in their squad.

Benitez could do with some more attacking firepower though and chasing sensation David Brooks from Sheffield United would be a much smarter idea.

The Sun have previously reported that Tottenham are keen on signing the 20-year-old attacker from the Championship as he is extremely highly rated and tipped for a massive future.

It is understood that back in February Spurs were in negotiations about a potential deal as they looked to conclude a £10million move.

Brooks is a dazzling playmaker that can fill the number 10 role or a striker and would be a great addition at St James’ Park.

Newcastle should turn their attention to the Wales international and look to bring him to the club, where he would have an easier path to the first team than at Spurs.

The Magpies will need to spend big if they are to maintain themselves in the top flight, but paying in the region of £10million for Brooks seems a far better deal than close to £20million for Gudmundsson.
