Rangers recovered from a minor scare against League One side Ayr United to come through 6-1 winners and progress to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup, and fans have taken to Twitter to praise the display of controversial forward Josh Windass.

Sunday’s match was nearly called off after snowfall at Somerset Park, but the fifth-round clash went ahead on schedule as Ayr looked for a famous win over the Light Blues.

And it was the minnows who took the lead as an almighty mistake from Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham allowed Alan Forrest to bundle home the opener.

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos was guilty of a shocking miss before he made amends with a tidy finish after Sean Goss’ effort has struck the bar, with the sides heading into the break at 1-1.

A three-goal burst from Jason Cummings, Morelos and Windass gave the Light Blues some daylight, before Windass’ second and Jamie Murphy’s first goal for the club sealed the big win.

Windass has come in for some controversy recently after making a shushing gesture at fans when he scored in a 2-0 win against Partick Thistle last week.

But his double on Sunday made amends for that, and fans took to Twitter to praise the 24-year-old after the match.
