Tottenham are in a battle to sign Real Madrid attacker Gareth Bale in the summer, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Spanish news outlet claims that Spurs will compete with Premier League rivals Manchester United to re-sign their former player.

It is understood that European giants Madrid will push through the sale of the 28-year-old at the end of the season and that a return to the Premier League is on the cards.

The report details that Spurs and Man United are the frontrunners for the left-footed sensation that cost Madrid £85.3million back in 2013.

Bale is set to be moved on by Madrid after a mixed spell with them, while teammate Karim Benzema is also expected to go through the Bernabeu exit doors.

The Wales international has made just 22 appearances this season due to injury problems, but has still managed nine goals and six assists.

Good move for Spurs?

Bale would be a very exciting signing for Spurs ahead of their move to a new ground and the Welshman re-joining them would send fans crazy with excitement.

The versatile attacker, who can play on either flank or a central position, rose to fame with his spell at Spurs.

He has been very successful with Madrid by winning three Champions league titles, but has always been in the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Bale would undoubtedly improve Mauricio Pochettino’s side and finally help them get over the line to win trophies.

However, Bale should be added to the squad and not signed as a replacement for a star player.

Likely to happen?

It appears like Bale is set to return to England and Spurs are in the race for his signature.

Man United should be considered slight favourites given their financial power, but a romantic return to North London is on the cards for Bale.
