Everton turned away interest on deadline day for five first-team players, according to a reliable journalist.

BBC Sport reporter Greg O’Keeffe claimed on his personal Twitter account that loan moves for Phil Jagielka, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ashley Williams and Tom Davies were all rejected.

It is also understood that a straight cash deal for striker centre-forward Oumar Niasse was turned down by Sam Allardyce’s side.

The Merseyside club did still have a busy final day of the January transfer window despite their rejections.

They managed to sign Eliaquim Mangala on loan from Manchester City, while Muhamed Besic, Louis Gray and Ademola Lookman all departed on a temporary basis.

OPINION

Everton were clearly active on the final day of the window and it always seems remarkable that these deals go right down to the wire. They made the right decision not to move on a number of their senior players despite offers as they couldn’t afford to rip the experience out of the side. The likes of Jagielka and Williams may not be around forever, but have certainly played their role this campaign and will continue to do so. Meanwhile midfield pair Schneiderlin and Davies are competing for a regular spot in the side alongside the likes of Wayne Rooney and Idrissa Gueye. The Toffees also decided to keep hold of centre-forward Niasse amid interest and his return of seven goals this season shows his importance.
