West Ham have confirmed that Pedro Obiang underwent successful surgery on his knee and that he should be fit in time for pre-season.

The Hammers provided the update via their official website on Tuesday and West Ham’s Head of Medical Gary Lewin revealed that he was confident the midfielder would return even stronger than before.

“Pedro has undergone surgery to repair the medial collateral ligament, and we’re delighted with how it went,” said Lewin, as quoted by the club’s official website.

“He went to a specialist in Barcelona for the operation and he is in the best possible hands as the rehab process gets underway.

“Pedro is likely to be out for a little while, but we are confident that he will return fit and strong in ample time for pre-season.”

The 25-year-old needed surgery after he damaged ligaments in his right knee during the Hammers 1-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup.

Ahead of his injury Obiang had been a regular for David Moyes’ side, making 26 appearances across all competitions.

OPINION

The central midfielder will be missed by West Ham during the second half of the season, as the Hammers struggle to find enough midfielders to play as it is. Obiang has put in some stellar performances for his side this season, as well as some woeful displays. The 25-year-old’s performance against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup was drastically bad and he was lucky not to cause his side to suffer a surprise defeat. However, even though he has put in some performances that he’d rather forget this season, the fact remains that given the size of the Hammers squad they really needed him to be fit before the end of the season in order to help them survive in the Premier League.
