Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to sell Toby Alderweireld this summer after contract talks collapsed, and fans have gone into meltdown on Twitter.
As reported by The Times, Alderweireld has rejected a contract offer of £110,000-a-week, instead demanding a salary around £150,000-a-week, which the club are not willing to pay a player of his age.
The newspaper report that manager Mauricio Pochettino has backed the club’s decision to sell the Belgian defender, as he understands the stringent wage structure and would prefer to spend the money elsewhere.
The Times claim that Spurs would still prefer to keep Alderweireld, but are not willing to risk upsetting the dressing room by giving in to his demands, while also losing £25million in value if they do not sell.
It is said that the club would demand more than £50million for Alderweireld, who is said to want a contract comparable to that of Liverpool’s £180,000-a-week star Virgil van Dijk.
Pochettino reportedly views Davinson Sanchez as a long-term replacement for Alderweireld, and is also confident in developing Juan Foyth into a first-team regular.
Fans have now taken to Twitter to express their dismay at the reported decision, and slam the club for potentially letting Alderweireld leave.

It really amazes me that Tottenham haven't renewed Toby Alderweireld's contract yet. He's been by far one of the best defenders in the league, it's just absolute stupidity by Poch because if he's ends up leaving that will hurt us big time

Toby Alderweireld is the best CB in the premier league bar none, it isn’t even a debate. If spurs sell him because they won’t pay the wages then we have to face the fact that we will never compete.

And people using the Rochdale game as a reason to sell him are just pure stupid. In 3 years at the club, that was his only bad performance. Get a grip. Losing Alderweireld over £40k difference would be a mistake #THFC

I agreed with the sale of Walker, the player wanted to go, but if the Alderweireld stories are true and we haven’t offered him the money, then that is unacceptable
