Steve Walsh facing sack at Everton

|

Everton director of football Steve Walsh is facing the sack after paltry returns on the club’s £239million recruitment drive in recent seasons, according to the Daily Mail

The newspaper claim that fresh questions are being asked of senior figure Walsh, 53, after the Toffees’ £27m purchase of Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun in January, with the Turkey international failing to make an impact so far.

The Mail report that Walsh was under pressure after the sacking of Ronald Koeman, but remained in place and was actively involved during the January window under Allardyce.

It is said that Everton owner Farhad Moshiri reportedly wants to be getting better value for money after his heavy outlay recently, and the club have been persistently linked with PSV director of football, Marcel Brands.

Much of the concern reportedly centres around the failure to purchase a naturally left-footed player, with there being clear gaps on the left side of the field for the Toffees.

Walsh joined the club in the summer of 2016 after impressing as scout at Leicester City.

OPINION

It is hardly surprising to hear that Walsh is under pressure, but it seems a bit premature for questions to be asked about their January business. It is not even half a month since the window closed, and new signings will need far longer to bed themselves in properly. Tosun in particular, who has come from the Turkish Super Lig, can surely not be expected to come in and hit the ground running. In truth, Walsh probably should have been sacked after their disastrous summer window, but he must now be given until the end of the season for the impact of the January recruits to fully take shape.
