Ben Davies has raved about Tottenham ace Eric Dier after he slotted into defence on Sunday during the 1-0 away win over Crystal Palace.

Spurs recorded a narrow victory in the Premier League courtesy of a late Harry Kane header and the result means they are now fourth in the table.

Mauricio Pochettino was without injured centre-back pair Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld for the weekend, which is why he turned to the versatile Dier.

The 24-year-old has been used mainly as a central midfielder this campaign, but has shown he can slot into defence when required and partnered Davinson Sanchez in a back four against Palace.

He impressed with his composure in the heart of defence and earned rave reviews for his dominant display.

Spurs left-back Davies was amazed by the quality of Dier as filled in during a pivotal victory over Palace.

“It’s the first one Jan has missed this year in the Premier League so it was a bit of an adjustment for us, but Eric slotted in and made it look easy,” Davies said, as quoted by the club’s official website.

“In different circumstances they looked to play long, it’s obviously tough but I thought we handled it well and we did our job.”

OPINION

Dier was certainly one of Spurs’ best players during a scrappy win over Palace on Sunday, which has given their top four hopes a major lift as they overtake London rivals Chelsea. The England international is a great mystery given his versatility, but one thing is sure that Pochettino always manages to fit him into the starting XI. Dier can play as both a midfielder or defender so comfortably that his best position is still unknown. His performance against Palace suggests that he could become a mainstay in the defence, but it would be good for him to find a favoured position.
