Tony Cascarino has torn Tottenham centre-forward Ferndano Llorente to shreds after his performance at the weekend against Rochdale.

The striker got a rare start for Spurs as they drew away 2-2 against the League One club in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

He was later replaced by teammate Harry Kane, with the first-choice striker coming off the bench to score.

Llorente has endured a frustrating season since he arrived in the summer and now has just two goals in 26 appearances.

The 32-year-old is the back-up option to Kane in attack, but has been unable to replicate the goalscoring form he showed at previously club Swansea.

Sky Sports pundit Cascarino has described Llorente as “very average” following his display against Rochdale and has suggested he isn’t good enough to play the supporting role to Kane.

“Llorente looked very average [against Rochdale] and he follows a trend of back-up strikers who fail at Tottenham,” Cascarino wrote in the Times.

“The lack of talent has helped Kane flourish but it means Tottenham are one serious injury away from their season falling apart.”

OPINION

Cascarino is spot in with the fact that Spurs could be left in dire straits if they did suffer an unfortunate injury to talisman Kane. Llorente has been a brilliant striker throughout his career, but has clearly now passed his best and the Spaniard isn’t good enough to put any pressure on the starting XI position. He arrived at Spurs as an excellent target man and managed 15 Premier League goals last season. However, Spurs perhaps made a mistake in shipping out Vincent Janssen on loan and need a goalscorer that come into the team at times to give Kane a rest.
