Guillem Balague has revealed that he believes Toby Alderweireld is not the best centre-back in the world and that believes that two younger Tottenham players will soon surpass their Belgian defensive stars.

In his Q&A for Sky Sports, the respected journalist shared that he thought Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez were likely to be seen as Tottenham’s best options at the centre of defence shortly ahead of Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

Balague commented on Alderweireld’s ability after a Spurs supporter referred to the 28-year-old as the best centre-back in the world.

“I’m not sure he is,” Balague said in response to the fan considering Alderweireld among the world’s best.

“I personally think Eric Dier and Sanchez can be the best centre backs at Spurs very soon.”

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham are trying to secure Alderweireld’s long-term future at the club by discussing a new contract with him, but talks have apparently stalled due to the defender’s wage demand.

The Daily Mirror previously reported that Alderweireld was seeking a new contract that would see him earn £150,000-a-week, which would be a significant pay rise for the 26-year-old as he currently earns £50,000-a-week.

The centre-back has made 16 appearances this season for Spurs and recently returned from injury in the 2-0 win over Newport County.

OPINION

Alderweireld is highly-rated with many seeing him as the world’s best centre-back so for Balague to suggest that he might not even be the best Tottenham have is bold. The Sky Sports journalist is no doubt convinced that Sanchez and Dier will improve in order to see them become better than Alderweireld, as they certainly don’t look like that at the moment. Sanchez was one of the weakest members of Spurs’ team during their 2-2 draw with Juventus on Tuesday, and Dier’s best position still looks like being in midfield. While Alderweireld’s demand of £150,000-a-week is high, he does deserve a significant increase on his current £50,000-a-week deal.
