Luke Shaw is in talks with Manchester United over signing a new contract to cap a sensational turn in fortunes, according to The Sun.

The newspaper claim that United have not only taken the option to extend the left-back’s contract by a year but have begun talks to seal Shaw’s long-term future in a shock move given the public criticism of the player from Jose Mourinho.

An Old Trafford source told The Sun that the 22-year-old had been having regular chats with Mourinho, who told him what he needed to do in order to get a new contract.

“Luke has had a series of one-on-one chats with the boss,” the source told the paper.

“He told him he will sanction an extended deal if he can continue to improve and make his mark.

“It’s an amazing turnaround for him after everything that’s happened, Luke is in a much better frame of mind now.

“He feels he has a future here despite everything that has been said and talked about.”

The left-back’s current deal, after the extension, expires in August 2019.

Shaw has fought his way back into the Manchester United team this season and made 11 appearances for his side across all competitions.

A previous report by The Sun shared that Shaw’s change of fortunes on the pitch weren’t his only transformation, as according to a Carrington insider, he was now the fittest player alongside Antonio Valencia at the club.

“Luke and Antonio are the best when it comes to actual endurance and stamina,” an insider told the paper.

The 22-year-old hasn’t featured in Man United’s last two league games with the defender being an unused substitute in both outings.

OPINION

Shaw has certainly turned his Manchester United career around and with talk of a long-term contract being discussed, his future looks bright. The 22-year-old appears to have worked hard to prove everyone that doubted he would be success at the club wrong. This attitude seems to have worked well for him. Shaw will now be hoping to continue improving at the club as the next step is for him to make himself a guaranteed starter at the club. The left-back’s recent performances did seem to stop the club signing a new full-back but after not featuring in the last two league games, Shaw needs to get back in the team. While Mourinho was probably just protecting him after he managed to complete five games in a row for the first in ages, Shaw needs to prove his capable of being played all the time in the coming seasons.
