Benitez needs to reassure Newcastle fans

While Rafa Benitez’s answers show his experience dealing with the media, the tactical genius needs to stop playing it safe and directly reassure Newcastle United fans.

With Amanda Staveley and her PCP Capital Partner’s attempted takeover apparently dead in the water, and the Magpies only three points adrift of the relegation zone; supporters need to hear positivity from Benitez.

In his press conference ahead of the Manchester City game, the Spanish boss was his usual vague self, when pressed by the media about his personal time at the club.

When asked about his future at the club, given the failed takeover; Benitez didn’t want to give a solid answer.

“My future is tomorrow against Manchester City that is it, football is football, but I am not thinking about that,” admitted Benitez, as quoted by the Chronicle Live.

It’s naive to think an experienced manager such as Benitez, doesn’t have one eye on his future; while continuing to focus on his job.

While it’s true his future depends on many factors that are out of his hands, the last thing Magpies supporters need to have is doubt.

Benitez is arguably the only bright light in a dismal campaign, and even just the suggestion of him leaving; is too much to handle for fans at this time.

A journalist then pressed the Spanish manager once more, before the end of the press conference, in order for him to give fans hope by asking for a message directly for the supporters.

“Our fans don’t need a message from me because they have been fantastic all season,” replied Benitez.

“The main thing is to stick together so we have more chances to stay in the PL.

“They are clever enough to understand the main thing is to support the team.”

Of course Magpies supporters will be happy about their manager complimenting their intelligence, but just because they’ve been fantastic in trying times, doesn’t mean a message wouldn’t help.

It wouldn’t have been hard for Benitez to promise that the team is working hard, and all that cliche stuff, that fans lap up but can’t prove.

The manager didn’t need to vow to stay at the club forever, though that would be celebrated, but he could have said something.

Newcastle United fans are passionate and faithful, and personally feel every set-back, and a positive message to cling to from a manager they respect would go a long way.

Benitez doesn’t need to worry about self preservation at the Magpies, as he is not held responsible for poor results, as fans are quick to blame Mike Ashley and everything else that’s going on behind the scenes.

Perhaps the Spanish manager will have a hopeful message to share after the Manchester City’s game, even if they get hammered like is expected.

Magpies supporters are arguably the best in the world, but just because of that; it doesn’t mean Benitez should be failing to reassure them during troublesome times.
