Tottenham have joined the race to sign Basel enforcer Manuel Akanji, according to Blick.

The Swiss newspaper claims that Spurs have entered the hunt for the 22-year-old defender and that he is a highly-rated talent.

It is understood that Borussia Dortmund are currently frontrunners for him and have tabled a £13.3million bid, but the Swiss club are holding out for closer to £17.7million.

The report details that interest from Premier League clubs such as Spurs, West Ham and Southampton has seen his price tag rocket.

Switzerland international Akanji is a no-nonsense centre-back that has helped Basel reach the last 16 of the Champions League this season to enhance his reputation.

Good move for Spurs?

Spurs already have a great selection of centre-back options in their squad and a move for Akanji makes little sense.

He has impressed for Basel this campaign during his 28 appearances, but it’s unlikely he would force his way into Mauricio Pochettino’s starring XI right now.

They already have the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier as suitable options in the heart of defence, which is without their injured star Toby Alderweireld.

Likely to happen?

Spurs have reportedly entered the running for Akanji, but it would be a surprise to see the defender switch to the Premier League.

He seems destined to join German heavyweights Dortmund and Basel are just trying to squeeze cash out of the deal right now.

Meanwhile, Pochettino should consider strengthening in other areas of the pitch during January as his defensive options are well settled.
