Liverpool are in pole position to sign Charlton Athletic defender Ezri Konsa, according to Kent Live.

The newspaper claims that the Reds are battling with Merseyside rivals Everton to sign the 20-year-old centre-back.

It is understood that Jurgen Klopp’s side have found themselves at the front of the queue for the England Under-20 international, despite the Toffees initially being the frontrunners for his signature.

The report details the Liverpool are keen to make a move for Konsa and that Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet is keen to cash in on his prized asset.

Konsa is a key player for League One club Charlton and has already made 29 appearances across all competitions this season.

Good move for Liverpool?

Konsa is an upcoming English talent in the lower leagues and is being tipped to play at a higher level in the future.

The versatile defender can play at either centre-back or right-back, something that should up his valuation.

Liverpool could do with another defensive signing in January despite the arrival of Virgil van Dijk, but it’ unlikely that Konsa would make an immediate impact at Anfield and is still one for the future.

The Reds have previously done business with Charlton when they signed Joe Gomez in 2015, which has seen him go on to become an important first teamer under Klopp.

Likely to happen?

This deal certainly appears to be a probability and may just need Liverpool to come forward with an official approach.

The highly-rated defender could be out of the Charlton exit doors for a decent sum to them and Klopp is always keen to promote young talents in his squad.
