Leeds United could begin talks with in-form attacker Pablo Hernandez about a contract extension after the close of the January transfer window, according to a reliable journalist.

Yorkshire Evening Post’s chief football writer Phil Hay has claimed on his personal Twitter account that he can see the Whites opening talks with the 32-year-old in February about a new deal.

It is understood his contract at Elland Road expires in the summer and talks may begin about extending his future with the Yorkshire giants.

Leeds have had a difficult start to 2018 and slipped outside of the play-off spots, but Hernandez has remained one of their most consistent players.

The attacking midfielder has been a mainstay in Thomas Christiansen’s side amid the chaos and is a key first teamer that could be set for a new contract

Good move for Leeds?

Hernandez has shown he is still an integral player at Elland Road and trying down his future should be high on the club’s transfer agenda.

The Spaniard has made 28 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring six goals and supplying six assists in return.

He is proving to be a very influential player in the Championship that is a cut above his teammates in terms of experience and technical ability.

Hernandez can still have a couple more years with Leeds being a star man and would be crucial if they were to achieve promotion back to the Premier League.

Likely to happen?

It seems highly unlikely that Leeds would allow a player of Hernandez’s quality to depart in the summer on a free transfer and imminent talks make sense.

He is a first-team regular with the Whites and the most likely scenario is that he extends is contract.
