Leeds United have the option to recall defender Lewie Coyle from his loan at Fleetwood Town following the injury blow to Luke Ayling, according to reliable journalist Phil Hay.

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s chief football writer explained on his personal Twitter account that the Whites have the option to recall Coyle and that it can only be carried out during the January transfer window.

It is understood that there has been no move from Thomas Christiansen’s side to bring the 22-year-old back to Elland Road as of yet.

However, Leeds are now short in the full-back department after the club confirmed on Wednesday morning that right-back Luke Ayling is set to miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury.

The 26-year-old has been an ever-present in defence this term and is set for a spell on the sidelines after surgery on his ankle.

That will leave Gaetano Berardi as the main option in the full-back positions, while Vurnon Anita and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson are alternative options.

Leeds are closing in on a deal for Club Brugge’s left-back Laurens De Bock as he undergoes a medical, according to Hay.

Coyle is an option that Leeds could explore this month if they wish to further add to their defensive options.

The Englishman has impressed during a temporary spell with League One club Fleetwood and recently helped them draw against Premier League outfit Leicester in the FA Cup third round.

OPINION

Leeds certainly need another option in the full-back area as Ayling’s injury setback has left the squad looking a little weak. Christiansen should look to bring Coyle back in January to compete for a starting XI position as neither Anita or Borthwick-Jackson have managed to do that. Coyle has impressed out on loan and the attack-minded right-back could be a great player at Elland Road if given the chance. He is a product of the club’s academy and his tally of five assists in 27 games for Fleetwood shows what he could add in terms of an attacking threat. Leeds are going to need a full squad if they are to get over the line for promotion in the second half of the season and there is no doubt Coyle could come in handy.
