Tottenham are not willing to fork out this January to sign Stevenage defender Ben Wilmot, according to Football London.

In a question-and-answer session with fans on their live blog on Wednesday (2:14pm), the Trinity Mirror site and reliable journalist Alasadair Gold report that Spurs are interested in the 18-year-old defender amid widespread reports.

However, it is understood that the north London club are not prepared to pay anywhere near a £1million sum for a player that only made his League Two debut at the weekend.

The Daily Mirror reported on their live transfer blog (Sunday 14 December, 8:39pm) that Spurs were closing in on a January deal for the centre-back.

It was explained that he was set to join the north London club for £850,000, despite interest from the likes of Liverpool, Leicester, Brighton and Southampton.

Good move for Spurs?

Wilmot is still a fairly unknown talent, but is a highly-rated defender that has caught the attention of several top-flight clubs.

Mauricio Pochettino has developed a knack of getting the best out of young players and ball-playing centre-back Wilmot from Stevenage appears like he could be the next to benefit from that.

Likely to happen?

The latest development in the chase for Wilmot shares the twist that Spurs don’t want to fork out for the defender, which is understandable given he has only made five senior appearances during his career.

However, despite the conflicting reports they still seem to be in the driving seat for the League Two defender and he looks to join the Premier League club.
