Rangers are set to open contract talks with young centre-back David Bates next week, according to the Scottish Sun

The newspaper claim that Bates’ performance in the Old Firm derby, in which he replaced veteran Bruno Alves after just 20 minutes, has convinced Graeme Murty that he deserves improved terms.

The Sun report that Bates’ current deal ends in May, and his agent has been invited to Ibrox in the coming days to thrash out a new contract for the enforcer and prevent him from transferring for nothing in the summer.

Bates, 21, put in a mature display at the back against Celtic, playing a key role in their much-improved display that saw them earn an important point at Parkhead.

The youngster has only made six appearances this season, and just 14 in all competition since he joined Rangers one year ago from Raith Rovers.

Good move for Rangers?

Absolutely.

Bates has had to bide his time since his move from Raith in January 2017, but his display in the Old Firm may well be the watershed moment in his Ibrox career.

The 21-year-old enforcer looked increasingly assured against a dangerous Celtic attack, and helped Rangers look the better side on the day.

Also, with his current deal up in May, there would be no point letting a young player with potential leave on a free.

Likely to happen?

This one looks like a given.

Bates has just grasped the biggest opportunity of his life with both hands, and there is no reason for him not to sign an improved deal with the club.

The club seem keen to offer him that, and this one should be wrapped up nice and easily.
