Norwich City captain Russell Martin is open to a January loan to Rangers but the club are yet to make an approach for the Scotland international, according to the Evening Times.

The newspaper report that Martin has been informed he is not part of the Canaries plans going forward, and is free to join another club this month.

The Times claim that the enforcer, who turns 32 on Thursday, would consider a move to Ibrox after making just seven Championship appearances so far this term.

Rangers boss Graeme Murty knows Martin well from his stint as a youth coach at Norwich, and may look to bring in Martin after Bruno Alves suffered a knee injury.

Martin has made over 300 appearances for the Canaries in a seven-year spell, including 125 appearances in the Premier League.

Good move for Rangers?

Absolutely.

Martin is a no-nonsense defender with vast experience in the Premier League and Championship, including 125 appearances in the English top flight.

He also has earned 29 caps for Scotland in his career so far, and represents a risk-free signing for Murty in January.

With Alves set for a spell on the sidelines, there is a definite need to bring in some defensive reinforcements in January, and Martin fits the bill perfectly.

Likely to happen?

Well, despite the move making clear sense, Rangers are reportedly yet to make a move for Martin.

However, now that Martin is said to have expressed interest in the move, a bid may be submitted soon.

Murty has spoken of his desire to make signings early in the month, and there is no reason why they can’t complete this one in a matter of days.

Martin is clearly unwanted in East Anglia, and there would seem to be no barriers to a move north to Glasgow.
