Celtic are set to sign 17-year-old Australian midfielder Leo Mazis after a successful trial in November, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim that the young midfielder, who currently plays for semi-professional Canberra side Belconnen United, is set to sign a three-year deal next week.

The Mail report that Mazis underwent a trial with the club at Lennoxtown in November, and he looks to have impressed Rodgers during the short stint.

Celtic already have one former Belconnen midfielder in their ranks, with Tom Rogic playing for the side before his selection for the Nike Football Academy led to a move to the Central Coast Mariners.

Good move for Celtic?

When news came through about Mazis’ two-week trial at Lennoxtown, it was not necessarily expected that the stint would lead to anything permanent.

Mazis is not signed to a A-League side, and has been plying his trade in the semi-professional leagues in Australia.

However, the young midfielder obviously did enough to impress Brendan Rodgers, and a three year deal shows that Mazis made a really positive impression during his trial.

With their move to bring in fellow Australian Rogic being so fruitful, the Hoops will just be hoping Mazis can emulate the success of his compatriot.

Likely to happen?

Celtic look to be close to announcing this one, and there is not much competition for his signature.

The Hoops are reportedly close to a completing a few deals this week, including moves for St. Mirren star Lewis Morgan and Dundee enforcer Jack Hendry.

Don’t be surprised if Mazis is announced as a Celtic player in the next week or so too.
