Graham Roberts raved about defender Jan Vertonghen after his performance in the draw against Southampton.

Spurs recorded a 1-1 away draw against the Saints in the Premier League as they suffered a dent in their top four pursuit.

Harry Kane cancelled out a Davinson Sanchez own goal for the visitors, but they were unable to find a winner in the second period.

They are now two points behind fourth-placed Liverpool in the league table, who do have a game in hand on them against strugglers Swansea on Monday night.

The north London club failed to pose their usual attacking threat during the Southampton clash, but Roberts was still impressed with Belgian centre-back Vertonghen.

The 30-year-old powerhouse defender has been very crucial to his side during Toby Alderweireld’s injury absence and is regarded as one of their most consistent performers.

“Did not play well but have to say Jan Vertonghen total class act been fantastic,” Roberts wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Spurs’ attackers quite often take the headlines for their performances, but there is no doubt that Vertonghen plays a pivotal role in the starting XI. The left-sided defender is an ever-present in Mauricio Pochettino’s side and has been a consistent performer for several years in the Premier League. He will be delighted when his teammate Alderweireld makes his comeback from injury and the two are arguably the fiercest centre-back combination in English football on their day. Vertonghen was once again his composed self in the Southampton clash and couldn’t do anything about Sanchez’s own goal in the first-half. Spurs are facing a huge set of fixtures in the coming weeks that will shape their season and they will need their defence at their best against the top teams.
