West Ham United are interested in a January swoop for Burnley midfielder Scott Arfield who is out of contract in the summer, according to the Independent.

The newspaper report in their live transfer blog (9/1/2018), that David Moyes is a big admirer of Arfield, who has just six months left on his current deal with the Clarets.

The Independent claim that Arfield has been offered an extension at Turf Moor, but is yet to take it, and West Ham are preparing an improved offer for the 29-year-old stalwart, who has spent five years at Burnley.

It is said that the Hammers would be willing to pay close to £2million for the Scotland-born Canadian international.

Moyes is reportedly a big fan of Arfield’s after trying to sign him during his time at Sunderland, and sees him as a reliable option with Premier League experience.

Good move for West Ham?

This would be a strange move for West Ham, but an understandable one as they look to avoid relegation.

Arfield has not really shown during his time at Burnley that he has what it takes to light up the Premier League, but he has been a solid performer nonetheless.

That is why Moyes wants him though, as he is dependable and experienced at the top level, and will be relatively cheap with his contract coming to an end.

It is hardly a signing that will inspire Hammers fans however.

Likely to happen?

This is early stages, but if West Ham do make an offer then it would seem likely to happen.

Arfield is yet to sign an extension at Burnley despite the offer already being on the table, and if the Hammers offer him a better contract there will be no reason why he would stay.

That offer needs to materialise first however, and until then it is impossible to say whether this one will happen.
