Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks with Barcelona for midfielder Andre Gomes in a move that could see Mousa Dembele join AC Milan, according to Calciomercato

The Italian football outlet report that Tottenham have now opened talks with Spanish giants Barcelona over a January move for pass master Gomes, who has been a long-term target for the club.

Calciomercato claim that the potential arrival of the Portuguese international could spark a merry-go-round of sorts, signalling the end of Dembele’s Spurs career with AC Milan interested in the 30-year-old.

It is said that Dembele admires the Italian giants, who currently sit in 11th in Serie A.

Good move for Tottenham Hotspur?

This is, quite obviously, a mixed bag for Spurs.

The acquisition of Gomes has been touted for a while, and the Barcelona midfielder would be an exciting addition to the Spurs squad.

During his time at Valencia, Gomes was one of the best players in La Liga, bossing the midfield for Los Che as they finished fourth in his first season, and a disappointing 12th in his final campaign.

The loss of Dembele however will not be popular with Spurs fans, who have grown to revere the big Belgian enforcer since his move from Fulham five years ago.

In truth, Dembele has been a shadow of his former self recently though, and his exit may not be too keenly felt on the pitch.

Likely to happen?

Despite Spurs being linked with Gomes since the summer, and AC Milan rumoured with Dembele recently, this report must be taken with a pinch of salt.

It has only just emerged that Gomes reportedly wants to leave the Blaugrana, so for Spurs to be in discussions already would seem premature.

That is not to say that these deals won’t happen, but that they are not likely to be advancing at the rate reported.
