Tottenham Hotspur forward Shayon Harrison has joined League One outfit Southend United on loan until the end of the season.

The Shrimpers announced the deal on their official website on transfer deadline day, with the speedy 20-year-old centre-forward becoming Chris Powell’s first signing as boss.

Harrison has made just one senior appearance for Spurs after coming through their academy, against Liverpool in the EFL Cup last season, but has been a regular fixture for the Under-23 side.

He has scored three goals in eight Premier League 2 appearances this season, with his season shortened by injury, and goes on his second loan spell away from the club after a short stint at Yeovil last season.

OPINION

Harrison was touted as one of the next batch of Spurs youngsters to make that jump into the first-team, but it has not quite happened for the 20-year-old. He has had some injury problems in recent times which have threatened his development, and this loan comes at the right time for him. Southend are led by Chris Powell, who has connections at Spurs, and it should give him the chance to impress in a first-team environment. With Mauricio Pochettino known to value youth development, Harrison may yet get a chance back at Spurs if he manages to play well and score goals for the Shrimpers. His turbo-charged runs and mobility will provide the third-tier outfit with a major asset in their relegation battle.
