Newcastle United are considering a move for Everton’s Aaron Lennon, according to ESPN.

The broadcaster claim that several Premier League clubs, including the Magpies, are monitoring the winger’s situation after the Toffees signed Theo Walcott.

ESPN report that Lennon could potentially be available for a cut-price fee as his contract expires in the summer.

Walcott’s arrival at Everton, after he signed for £20million according to the BBC, is expected to see Lennon’s playing-time reduced.

Ahead of Walcott joining the club, Lennon had made 19 appearances for the Toffees this season, registering two assists.

The Shield Gazette also reported the Magpies’ interest in Lennon, but suggested that Rafa Benitez was looking to sign the winger on loan rather than on a permanent deal.

Good move for Newcastle?

Yes. The Magpies are in desperate need of strengthening their squad as they find themselves in a relegation fight.

Newcastle United’s priorities in the transfer market should be finding a striker and a goalkeeper, but Lennon’s experience will be a useful asset.

The 30-year-old has played 342 Premier League games across his time at Tottenham, Everton and Leeds United.

The veteran winger has shown this season for the Toffees his ability to track-back and aid his defence, as well as drive forward to push for a goal using his extreme pace and mobility.

With the Magpies’ takeover not looking like happening anytime soon, the 30-year-old is a cheap realistic signing.

Likely to happen?

Walcott’s arrival will certainly see Lennon fall down the pecking order at Everton, and with his contract expiring, the Toffees will cash-in.

The only issue in Newcastle United’s pursuit of the winger, is if the Shield Gazette’s report about wanting him on loan is true.

With the 30-year-old available for free in the summer, Everton would rather get money from a sale rather than a small loan fee, unless a purchase option is attached to any temporary move.
