Newcastle United are in the hunt to sign New York City winger Jack Harrison, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper claim that the Magpies are competing with Premier League rivals Stoke and Championship side Middlesbrough in a three-horse race for the 21-year-old.

The Star report that New York are now willing to sanction a permanent exit for Harrison after initial talk of a loan deal this month.

It is said that Middlesbrough are currently in pole position to sign the England Under-21 winger, with Tony Pulis ready to strike a £6million deal.

Stoke native Harrison is a former Manchester United trainee but moved to the USA aged 14, and made his way through college football to the MLS.

Good move for Newcastle United?

There have been rumours flying around about Harrison’s future ever since the youngster was called up to the England Under-21s for the first time in October.

The 21-year-old was in impressive form in the MLS last season, scoring 14 goals and laying on 10 assists, and a return to England has looked on the cards for a while now.

The Magpies are the latest in a long line of clubs interested in the 21-year-old, and it is hard to say whether that is a good decision or not.

Harrison has shown he can mix it with the best in the MLS, but there will be questions over whether he can translate that to the Premier League.

Likely to happen?

Newcastle seem late to the party on this one, and Boro now look in pole position for the starlet.

However, that could be the best move for all involved, with Harrison starting out in England at Championship level instead of being thrown straight into top-flight football.
