Rafa Benitez has suggested that Freddie Woodman will only be allowed to leave on loan if Newcastle United secure another goalkeeper in January.

The Magpies manager responded to a question about whether Woodman was set to be loaned out after he featured in the FA Cup victory over Luton Town.

“He needs to enjoy this moment because we have won and he was part of it, after that we will decide what is best for him and the club,” answered Benitez, as quoted by the Chronicle Live.

” If we are going to do something with him, it will have to be this month, but Elliot is injured and we are working to try and find what we need and after we will make a decision.”

The 20-year-old goalkeeper is currently Newcastle United’s number two choice, with a thigh injury keeping Rob Elliot from being available for selection.

Chronicle Live believes that Benitez is keen to bring a new senior goalkeeper to the club and the Magpies have previously been linked with making a move for Joe Hart.

OPINION

Woodman had a solid performance against Luton but the highly-rated goalkeeper needs regularly football in order to improve. It’s in the club’s and the player’s best interest to secure the 20-year-old a loan move. However with it depending on Newcastle United signing a new goalkeeper, it’s a worry that Woodman might miss his opportunity to secure a temporary exit. The Magpies showed their inability to get transfers done in the summer and with a takeover up in the air, there’s concern how quickly, if at all, the club can get business done.
