Valencia are interested on signing Manchester United’s Juan Mata in the summer once his contract expires, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper claim that despite previous reports, Man United haven’t extended the midfielder’s contract beyond the summer, which means he could join Valencia for free in the summer.

The Daily Star report that Manchester United haven’t decide whether to trigger an option to extend his deal by a year, as the club would be keen to get his £170,000-a-week wages off their books.

The 29-year-old attacking midfielder has regularly featured under Jose Mourinho this season, playing 25 times and scoring three goals.

Mata, who is happy to stay at the club according to the report, joined Manchester United from Chelsea in 2014 for a fee of £37.1million.

Good move for Manchester United?

No. The creative midfielder has proven his worth in recent seasons, and to let him to go for free, seems foolish.

While it’s true that Mata’s mouthwatering wages are hard to justify, if the club are determined to let him go, they should at least try to get a small fee for him.

The midfielder’s former club, Valencia, would no doubt be open to paying a small fee, which is better than nothing, to ensure the talented player’s return.

Likely to happen?

As time ticks down on his contract, the chances of him leaving the club improve drastically.

With Valenica currently third in La Liga, Mata will no doubt be flattered by his former club’s interest.

However, the midfielder has just opened a restaurant in Manchester and if he is to depart his current club; he may want to stay in the country to be near his new business venture.
