Newcastle United need to bring in a top quality goalkeeper in January to improve a problem area of the pitch and Manchester United ace Sergio Romero would be a brilliant option.

The Magpies have used both Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow in goal this season, with neither of them really covering themselves in glory.

Rafael Benitez must try sign a new shot-stopper that can ensure his side stretch their four-point cushion above the relegation places in the Premier League.

The North East club are still unclear over what sort of transfer budget they will have to work with amid a takeover, but that should not prove an issue with Man United’s wantaway star.

The Independent reports that goalkeeper Romero wants to leave Old Trafford in the New Year after playing a back-up role to David De Gea in the last two years.

It is understood the 93-time capped Argentina international wants to be playing regular football in the second half of the season to ensure he is part of his nation’s World Cup squad in the summer.

He would be prepared to leave United on loan and St James’ Park would certainly be the perfect destination for him.

Romero, 30, is a seriously underrated player in England and because he is the understudy to De Gea many Premier League fans are unaware of his quality.

The shot-stopper has kept an incredible 20 clean sheets in 33 games during his spell with United, which is even more impressive given he is not a regular starter.

He is an agile goalkeeper with great experience, is confident in possession and would be a brilliant addition to Benitez’s squad.

Newcastle fans are desperate to see some top-class players arrive at the club and Romero would fit the bill, while also improve their goalkeeping options.
