Newcastle United are interested in signing Red Star Belgrade striker Richmond Boakye late into the January transfer window, according to HITC.

The news outlet claims that Premier League duo Newcastle and Crystal Palace are lining up moves for the 24-year-old at the Serbian top-flight club.

It is understood that both English teams have been keen to bolster their attacking options in the current window.

The report details that they are both readying to firm up their interest with a move before Wednesday’s deadline cut-off point.

The centre-forward is still under contract with Red Star until 2020, but the Serbian side are prepared to receive late offers.

Boakye has been ripping up the top flight in Serbia this season with 15 goals in 14 league games.

The Ghana international has also been prolific across European matches and has 23 goals across all competitions this campaign.

Good move for Newcastle?

It is clear that Rafael Benitez’s side need a new prolific goalscorer to lead their line and Boakye looks like he could have the potential to succeed at St James’ Park.

He is a pacy striker that has shown his quality in front of goal and would be worth a gamble for the North-East club.

However, the only concern would be that he could struggle to replicate his blistering form if he made the move to a more competitive Premier League.

Likely to happen?

Newcastle have left it extremely late in the window if they are to sign a top striker and it would be a surprise if they managed to land Red Star’s talisman.

Kenedy is the only new arrival in the January window so far from Chelsea and it would need to be a swift process if they were to sign Boakye.
