Leeds United are working on a deal to sign Preston North End striker Jordan Hugill in this month’s transfer window, according to Football Insider.

The football news site claim that Elland Road director of football Victor Orta is ready to make a move to try and lure the centre-forward away from their Championship rivals.

Football Insider report that Leeds have reignited their pursuit of Hugill, 25, after trying to sign him last summer following the departure of Chris Wood to Burnley.

It is said that Preston managed to keep hold of their prize asset even after he handed in a transfer request at Deepdale.

Hugill, who finished last season as Preston’s top scorer with 13 goals, has netted 10 goals in 26 appearances in all competitions so far this season to enhance his reputation as one of the best strikers in the Championship.

Good move for Leeds?

Yes. Leeds have struggled to replace the goals and impact of Wood this season, with Pierre-Michel Lasogga the best of their group of strikers but failing to live up to the reputation that once placed him on the verge of the Germany national side. Hugill is a targetman who can lead the line, pull defenders out of position and create space for others. He also has a decent scoring record, with 30 goals from 111 Preston matches and is entering his peak years.

Likely to happen?

The word is that Preston are determined to keep hold of their star striker, but he is out of contract in 18 months and they are vulnerable to a bid. Hugill has also handed in a transfer request before, which shows he is keen to make a move. Leeds have a good chance of making this deal happen.
