Fleetwood Town are in talks to sign former Leeds United midfielder Toumani Diagouraga, according to Football Insider.

The football news site claim that the League One club are working on a deal to land the Frenchman, 30, and are poised to offer him a transfer to Highbury.

Diagouraga will become a free agent this weekend when his short-term deal with Plymouth expires and he could leave after the game against Bury at Home Park on Saturday.

Football Insider report that Plymouth have been keen to extend the central midfielder’s stay but third tier rivals Fleetwood have swooped in and are ready to hand over a long-term contract.

Diagouraga has impressed at Plymouth since joining the club on a free transfer in October following his departure from Leeds United after he was deemed surplus to requirements by Thomas Christiansen.

Diagouraga has helped the club climb off the bottom of League One with a number of impressive displays with the Frenchman only being on the losing side in three out of nine 15 games since his arrival.

OPINION

Christiansen was of the same opinion as his Leeds predecessor Garry Monk after running the rule over Diagouraga in pre-season, he is not quite of the standard needed to anchor the midfield for the Championship promotion hopefuls. His contract was paid up to enable him to make an early exit from Elland Road and join Plymouth as a free agent. League One is the right level for the Frenchman, who does not have the technique and composure on the ball to thrive at a top-ten Championship outfit. His family is still based in Leeds, which perhaps explain why he is on the verge of committing to Lancashire outfit Fleetwood rather than accept the deal on offer from Plymouth.
