Leeds United are interested in signing Manchester United’s midfield colossus Scott McTominay in January, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claims that the Whites are keen on a loan deal for the 21-year-old when the transfer window re-opens next month, while Championship rivals Preston and Bolton are also on alert for his signature.

It is understood that five unnamed teams have made contact with United about the upcoming talent to see whether he will be made available in January.

The report details that Jose Mourinho’s side are keen to give their academy graduate regular game time, but there is not yet a guarantee of a loan move due to the size of their squad.

McTominay is a powerful 6ft 4in central midfielder that has five senior appearances for United so far this season, including three in the Champions League group stages.

Good move for Leeds?

McTominay is an upcoming talent at Old Trafford that has impressed so far when given the opportunity in United’s senior team.

He has been used as a defensive midfielder by Mourinho this campaign and has helped screen the back four with his physical presence.

The midfielder is also a technically gifted player and is surely someone that would appeal to Leeds fans.

However, Thomas Christiansen already has an overload of midfielders in his squad right now and that should not be a priority in the January window.

The Whites can’t manage to fit Mateusz Klich into their first team following his summer arrival and landing McTominay would be somewhat pointless despite his quality.

Likely to happen?

Leeds have done business with United recently in the loan market as Cameron Borthwick-Jackson is currently at Elland Road from the Premier League giants.

His failure to make an impression with the Whites could put off United with regards to McTominay, who is desperate for regular football.

It seems unlikely that United will allow McTominay to leave in January despite widespread interest due to a lack of numbers during a busy fixture list.
