Chris Sutton has claimed that Rangers defender James Tavernier was the best player on the pitch in the goalless draw against Celtic on Saturday afternoon.

The Gers recorded a 0-0 draw in the Scottish Premiership on their trip to Parkhead against their Old Firm rivals.

Graeme Murty’s side certainly had their chances to win the league clash too as striker Alfredo Morelos was denied in spectacular fashion by goalkeeper Craig Gordon.

Meanwhile, Celtic’s Scott Sinclair was also close to breaking the deadlock and missed a fantastic chance in the closing stages of the first-half.

Pundit Sutton believes Rangers will be delighted with a point and named their defender Tavernier as the man of the match.

The 26-year-old right-back helped preserve a clean sheet and was also a real attacking threat down the flank.

“Rangers draw… must feel like a win… Celtic lacklustre… Not enough of their players turned up… Tavernier best player on park,” Sutton wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Tavernier is one of several Rangers players that can be delighted with their individual display against Celtic and they pushed the reigning champions all the way. The full-back has become an integral player for the Light Blues recently and was at his best at the weekend. He has always been an attack-minded defender and it was his mazy run that lead to Morelos’ brilliant chance that could have won the game. He was also very effective defensively and put in some brilliantly timed challenges. The most standout part of the game was his leadership qualities as he reigned in youngster Ross McCrorie from committing forward for a corner, which could have left the team vulnerable to a Celtic counter attack.
