Rangers are eyeing up a January swoop for Norwich City skipper Russell Martin who has been told he can leave the club, according to the Daily Record

The newspaper claim that Rangers boss Graeme Murty has been alerted to the Scotland international’s availability, with the player keen on a potential move to Ibrox.

The Record report that Murty has drawn up a list of targets for January with director of football Mark Allen, and Martin is a key target.

Martin, 31, has only made seven senior appearances for the Canaries this term, even playing several games for the club’s Under-23 side, and has been told he can leave next month.

The enforcer has played 125 games in the Premier League for Norwich, on top of 144 appearances in the Championship.

Good move for Rangers?

100%.

Martin is a proven performer at the highest level, captaining Norwich regularly during their time in the Premier League and earning several caps for Scotland.

With the long-term future of Bruno Alves in doubt, Martin would be fantastic like-for-like replacement for the Portuguese enforcer.

He could easily slot straight into their back line with no problems, and his big-game experience would be indispensable in Rangers’ push for European football next season.

Likely to happen?

If the Record are to be believed, then this is a deal that does look likely.

Martin has been told he can leave Carrow Road, and is said to be keen on a move to Glasgow.

The only sticking point here may be the fee, with cash-strapped Rangers potentially unable to meet Norwich’s valuation, which is unknown at this time.

If that hurdle can be overcome then don’t be surprised to see Martin lining up in light blue come January.
