Rangers have begun talks with Brighton over a permanent January deal for out-of-favour winger Jamie Murphy, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster report that the Gers are keen on a deal for the former Motherwell star, but a fee is yet to be settled upon after the opening of discussions.

Murphy has found himself on the bench for the majority of this season, despite playing a key part in the Seagulls’ promotion with 40 appearances in the Championship last term.

The winger has however made just four Premier League appearances so far this campaign, and looks to be on the way out of the Amex Stadium.

The 28-year-old Scot started his career with Motherwell before a move to Sheffield United followed in 2013. He has been at Brighton since 2015, and has made 83 first-team appearances on the south coast.

Good move for Rangers?

This is exactly the kind of player that Rangers should be looking to sign in January.

Murphy has experience in both Scottish and English football, andplayed a key role for Brighton in their promotion push last term.

He is now massively out-of-favour and looking for a new club, and Rangers are perfectly poised to swoop for him.

If they can put together a decent offer then Murphy could prove to be a shrewd first signing of the January window.

Likely to happen?

One thing that looks certain is an exit from Brighton for Murphy.

He is quite clearly surplus to requirements now that they have reached the top-flight, and there looks to be no resistance to him leaving in January.

The first question here is competition. Are there any other clubs interested?

The second, and probably more important question here, is money. How much can Rangers afford to offer? While Brighton won’t be looking for a big fee, whether Gers can offer a fee worthy of a Premier League player is unknown.
