Kris Commons has hailed James Tavernier and Declan John for their performances in Rangers’ goalless draw against Celtic at Parkhead on Saturday.

Right-back Tavenier and left-back John were two of the outstanding players for the visitors as they delivered an impressive performance that could have even yielded all three points.

Former Celtic playmaker Commons was blown away by the defensive performances of the pair as well as their attacking threat in the final third of the pitch.

“The full-backs were pivotal,” Commons told Sky Sports’ football channel in the immediate aftermath of the match. “They were producing some marvellous runs, good through balls and creating the best chances for Rangers.

“Not only were they defensively brilliant, but attackingly they were really strong”.

Rangers have failed to make up ground in the title race, where they remain 11 points adrift of Celtic, who had come into the match on the back of three consecutive wins.

OPINION

Pound for pound, Tavernier has been the outstanding Rangers player during their two seasons in the Scottish Premiership. He is a fine full-back and the growing signs are that John is an equally effective performer on the other flank. Credit to the club for moving quickly to convert his loan into a permanent transfer. The mystery is why Neil Warnock was so eager to get rid of him from the Cardiff ranks. John has been excellent since stepping in for the injured Lee Wallace and certainly did not look inferior to Kieran Tierney on Saturday.
